Playa Hermosa, commonly referred to as Costa Rica’s national surf stadium, is known for its perfect tubes and epic swells, a true surfers heaven.
Along its 7 km of beach you can find surf shops, tons of amazing little spots, and surfers from all around the world. It’s a place where you breathe, sleep and eat surf.
It is an hour and a half drive away from San Jose and just 5 minutes from Jacó. Due to its proximity to the city it is an ideal destination for people seeking a quick getaway.
Surfers flock to this magnificent place to enjoy the challenging waves that can reach a height of 13 feet. It’s best known surf spots are “el Arbol” and “la Curva”, which have not too deep sandy bottoms. “Las Terrazas” is another popular surf spot in spite of having a sandy bottom with rocks that may stick out during low tide.
Due to a joint effort on behalf of the government and members of the community, Playa Hermosa has been awarded an Ecological Blue Flag for its clean beaches. Thus, making it not only a perfect surfing hub but also a great place to sunbathe and contemplate its lush landscape.
Some nearby places that are a must see are the Playa Hermosa Wildlife Refuge and Manuel Antonio Park. Playa Hermosa Wildlife Refuge is nesting site for the olive ridley sea turtle, the second smallest and most abundant of all sea turtles found in the world.
